Under Jake’s leadership, SFGMC has expanded its artistic and community impact in exciting ways. He initiated the holiday Composition Competition, inspiring new works specifically for TTBB choruses. Jake also led the chorus on a Midwest tour, partnering with local LGBTQ+ choruses and advocacy organizations to build meaningful connections beyond the Bay Area. Under his direction, SFGMC has opened sets for Tinashe and Kim Petras, taken the mainstage at Outside Lands alongside Big Freedia, and performed with the San Francisco Symphony and Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir. The chorus has also collaborated with notable guests including Lady Camden and Justin Tranter, further broadening its reach and influence.

At Purdue University, Jake developed and advanced two complementary frameworks: “Singing as Civic Engagement” and “Resilient Intercultural Pedagogy.” These approaches emphasize the role of choral music as a catalyst for social connection, cultural dialogue, and community resilience. Through collective singing, Jake explores how empathy, curiosity, and openness are nurtured—essential qualities for intercultural understanding and meaningful personal growth. His work garnered recognition for its innovative integration of artistry and social impact, especially during times of societal challenge.

His diverse musical background includes teaching in Wisconsin public schools, directing choirs and theater programs in New York City, and freelance work as an arranger, accompanist, and vocal coach in Indiana. Jake holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Carroll University and a Master of Music in Conducting from Butler University.

What Singing, Bolognese, and Valencia Street Taught Me About Gratitude

Gratitude feels a lot like a good bolognese. It starts simple, even messy, but with time and attention it deepens into something richer—something that reminds me to slow down and notice more.
